Small size, big talent

Leah_wis Towaco's Leah Wis an accomplished athlete at tender age of nine - Up a steep, stone-lined driveway. Past a maroon front door. Inside a half-red brick, half-off white aluminum sided house. A monster lives here.

She doesn't look like a monster. Her flowing blonde hair is pulled back in a sour-green scrunchie and her bright pink nails look like they've been given a girly touch.

She smiles as she opens the door, welcoming her visitor with a subdued, ladylike, "hello."  The smile checks out fine -- no fangs. Maybe the monster is costumed as a unique little girl, a Junior Olympian named Leah Wis.  See Daily Record.  photo by bob karp / daily record

Montville Claims Sectional Championship

Broncos now 24-6; When sophomore reliever Jerry Elsing struck out RoMatrangab Segedin swinging, it was well worth the five-hour plus wait for Elsing and his Montville teammates as the Mustangs downed Old Tappan, 9-7, to capture the North 1, Group III sectional final on their home field Friday night.

Montville (24-6) didn't have an easy ride to the crown as the initial 4 p.m. start was delayed 2 hours and 18 minutes because of thunder, lightning and intermittent rains. But the once ominous setting ironically turned to a mild, pleasant atmosphere throughout the game as the host Mustangs finally began to stride accordingly down the stretch and avenge a 7-1 defeat to Old Tappan in last year's finals.  See Daily Record.

Mustang Stampede!

Montville's team effort leads to state victory; Mustangs now 23-6! - Bilde As "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses roared through a pair of speakers just a few feet from where he was sitting, Montville's Charles Matarazzo voiced concern while watching his teammates bounce around energetically during pre-game warmups. "I don't think we need to get any more pumped," he said.

Two hours later, Matarazzo's worries proved needless. Montville crushed Morris Hills, 12-2, in five innings, thriving off the strength of its big bats and steady glovework.  See Daily Record.

Montville Beats Pequannock in Baseball

Mustangs Now 15-3! - It was a fastball, up, in and mighty tempting to any cleanup hitter. It was also Jim DeZao's favorite dish. The Montville first baseman devoured it, sending it well over the left field fence for a three-run home run that was so big, so stunning, that it seemed to deliver a second-inning knockout blow to two-time defending Morris County Tournament champion Pequannock.
