When Nick and Dan Knauer learned of the book collection drive being sponsored by Montville Pet Parents in advance of a Book Sale to raise money to help homeless pets, they decided that they wanted to be a part of doing something positive on behalf of a constituency that is unable to speak for themselves.
Their initial plan was to place a book collection bin in MontvilleTownshipHighSchool. Although the timing to the upcoming Book Sale would only allow them to have this collection point for one week, they managed to receive over 100 donated books. Not satisfied that this collection alone was sufficient, they then came up with an additional approach to obtain more books.
They quickly designed and posted a flyer to some 200 mailboxes in their extended neighborhood and were overwhelmed with more than 700 additional books within days of posting this flyer. With more than 800 books collected, they boxed and delivered them, with the help of their parents, Terene and Keith, to the Montville Public Library where the sale was held on October 18.
Sue Goldblatt, President of Montville Pet Parents presented both boys with a letter of appreciation and making them members of this all volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to making the world a kinder place for homeless pets. Sue said "it renews the spirit to see the determination, creativity and caring that is capable of our young people to want to contribute to a worthy cause that is much bigger than themselves. We are grateful for the positive contributions Nick and Dan have made to what turned out to be a very successful Book Sale as part of our fund raising efforts to provide well care services for the homeless animals at the Montville Animal Shelter and to contribute to building a new shelter".
