Bader Farm, A Montville Township Tradition

Bella Goldie Bader came to Montville Township in 1907 and since then, generations of Baders Bader have  tended to the family's farm at 290 Changebridge Road.

A mostly commercial and residential area, this part of Pine Brook may seem a strange location for a farm, but the area was once a thriving agricultural community.  While the other farms have been developed over, Bader Farm remains. It is now run by Bella's great-grandson, Ivan, his wife Jean, and their two sons, Sean and Ian.

"I'm a dying breed, the Last of the Mohicans," noted Ivan, with some humor.

More seriously, he called it "wonderful" and an "honor" to keep up the family's tradition, which started in 1892 in Roseland. "I'd like to see the farm stay here after me and forever," said Ivan.

CONDURSO’S GARDEN CENTER & FARM MARKET

Autumn picture Hints of the changing seasons abound: the first appearance of red and orange leaves, cooler days, and earlier sunsets. This does not mean that it is time to abandon the garden. Not with mums, cabbage and kale around, as well as gourds, pumpkins, and cornstalks. All these items and more are currently available at Condurso's Garden Center & Farm Market, which is in its 81st year "of growing."

The story of the Garden Center dates back to 1929 when Rose and Bartholomew Condurso purchased the site at 96 River Road, previously the Dalton Dairy Farm. Rose and Bart kept some of the cows, pigs, and chickens in order to provide food for their eight children as well as the farm workers. The horses were used for plowing and transporting produce to the Newark Market. The family continued in this way for many years, expanding their sales territory to other large markets and grocery stores.

Bang-Bang Shrimp and Love at Bone Fish Grill

Bonefish Most people go to our local Bone Fish Grill in Pine Brook seeking Bang-Bang Shrimp or grilled tilapia, not love.  Then again, as they say, one finds that special someone when least expected.

There was no way David Forman could have anticipated what would happen when he reported in at his part-time job at the Pine Brook restaurant one fateful night in May 2008. But at one of his tables sat Michelle Prontnicki and her  friends  Liz and Barbara, who were back home on a  visit from out-of-state with a hankering for Bone Fish food.

Profile on Montville's Rockline Industries

Rockline The general manager of Rockline Industries' Montville Township plant, Chris Bruno is no stranger to the world of coffee and is at home in the business of manufacturing. Telltale signs of his past and present abound in his office where old coffee tins carrying names such as Ehlers, Boscul, and Chase & Sanborn sit on a shelf.  Before joining Rockline in 1996 as plant manager, Chris, a Brooklyn native, worked as plant manager at Chock full o' Nuts Coffee and for A&P's Eight O'Clock Coffee. Good experience for a man who now works for the largest manufacturer of coffee filters in North America. The Montville plant, which sits on 33 acres off of Kramer Way, is one of several Rockline facilities worldwide. The  headquarters is in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

The 34 year-old company, privately owned by the Rudolph family, is also the largest manufacturer of wet wipes in North America.  But in Montville, only coffee filters - both basket and cone - are made. The paper comes from Canadian mills and  has different properties: base weight and flow rate (the measure of how fast coffee will flow through to make a cup of coffee). The basket filters run in size from four cups to 29 inches in diameter for institutional use. The cone filters are mainly for two to four cups. Chris is perfectly comfortable talking java. When asked if he does in fact partake of the caffeinated beverage,  he is quick to say with a grin, "You betcha I'm a coffee drinker!" His favorite is Chock Full o' Nuts.
