Lazar Students to Stage “Fiddler on the Roof Junior,” April 22 and 23

Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville, New Jersey will present “Fiddler on the Roof Junior,” Fiddler CastWednesday and Thursday, April 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m. The classic American musical, with book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). “’Fiddler on the Roof Junior’ is a special adaptation of the classic Broadway musical, which tackles the universal theme of tradition in ways that reach across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion,” the MTI website explains.

Montville UNICO Presents its 26th Annual Dinner Dance May 2, 2015

UnicoOn Saturday, May 2, 2015, Montville UNICO Foundation will present its 26th Annual Dinner Dance at the Hanover Manor, Eagle Rock Ave, E. Hanover, NJ.  This year the theme will be the “Kentucky Derby” with a live big screen viewing at race time 6:30pm.  With a cocktail hour from 5:00 pm- 6:00 pm and dinner and dancing until 10:00pm and an open bar all night, we anticipated a fun evening.  All women are encouraged to wear a decorated hat, as is derby custom, and prizes for the best hats will be awarded.  Other derby traditions of food and drink will also be available.

Hilldale Elementary School Donates 370 Sandwiches to Homeless Bus

The 367 students of Hilldale Elementary School in Montville, New Jersey joined forces to send 370 Sandwich 1sandwiches, wrapped in hearts, to Homeless Bus, Inc. A non-profit that travels to New York City from Towaco, New Jersey, every Saturday night, Homeless Bus, Inc. was founded by Mark and Anna Landgrebe in 1992. The dedicated family of volunteers is based in the Towaco section of Montville Township. In addition to making sandwiches, the kindergarten through fifth grade students donated dollars to decorate hearts.

Montville Mustangs Bring Home the Halvorsen Cup

Halv CupMontville’s varsity hockey team reached a great milestone this season. On Feb. 19, the Mustangs, with only 52.1 seconds on the clock, scored the game winning goal against West Morris to take their first Halvorsen Cup at Mennen Arena. New to the division this year, the Mustangs went into the season having lost key players with the graduating class of 2014. "Our biggest challenge was going to be replacing the experience we lost in defense and finding more attackers to score goals," said Head Coach Meg Hishmeh. "We lost four of our five defense which meant we would be relying on one senior, one converted sophomore and three freshmen to play defense. Continue reading northjersey.com.

Montville Township Police Explorers to Hold Tricky Tray Fundraiser

Explorers 3The Montville Township Police Explorers will be holding a tricky tray fundraiser on Thursday, April 30th at Hanover Manor in East Hanover. The Post, which is a non-profit youth group, has existed for more than 30 years, and is for students ages 14 to 21 who are interested in law enforcement. Explorers attend meetings throughout the school year to learn enforcement techniques, but the Post also provides community service within the Township by performing such services as aiding at the Montville Fourth of July celebration and the Relay for Life celebration, and keeping business parking lots cleared at the Towaco Music & Arts Festival.

Tentative School Budget Accepted by Montville Township Board of Education

040115-nn-jamestevisThe Montville Township Board of Education voted to accept the preliminary 2015-16 school budget at a special BOE meeting on Tuesday, March 17, which allows James Tevis, secretary to the Board of Education, to submit the tentative budget to the executive county superintendent of schools for approval in accordance with the statutory deadline. The tentative total general fund expense budget for 2015-16 is $72,601,362. The total of taxes to be raised is $64,913,806. For the average homeowner, taxes will increase $151.84. This figure is based on the average home valued at $527,951. The tax increase is at the state required 2-percent cap. After the tentative budget is approved by the state, there will be a public hearing and adoption of the budget on Tuesday, April 28. Changes to the budget may occur until the vote that day. One major change in the revised preliminary budget is that the teacher reduction in William Mason will not occur.

Montville Resident to Become the New Dean of Student Life

031815-nn-depasqualeGill St. Bernard’s School in Gladstone has announced that David Pasquale, of Montville, director of athletics, has accepted a new position as dean of student life, effective July 1. Pasquale was appointed director of athletics in 2005, after 12 years of teaching and coaching at Newark Academy. With over 400 career victories as a head baseball and basketball coach, Pasquale was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association (NJSCA) Hall of Fame in March of 2014 and over the past 10 years has played a significant part in the growth of Gill’s athletics program and facilities. Throughout Pasquale’s tenure, GSB successfully transitioned its competitive reach from the all-independent school Patriot Conference to the Skyland Conference (2009) and expanded the number of interscholastic athletic offerings to include swimming, fencing, ice hockey and lacrosse.

William Mason Elementary Student Named New Jersey National Geographic State Bee Semifinalist


HalperngeoBen Halpern, a 4th grade student at William Mason Elementary School in Montville, New Jersey, has been notified  by the National  Geographic Society  that he is one of the semifinalists eligible  to compete  in the 2015 New Jersey National  Geographic State Bee, sponsored  by Google  and Plum Creek.  The contest will be held at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey on Friday, March 27, 2015. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 27th year. To qualify, Halpern emerged as the champion of the William Mason School Geo Bee. School Bees were held, throughout the state, in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students, to determine a school champion.
