Looking to save

Options for decreasing the 2010 municipal budget were proposed at the Montville Township Committee Budget meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Furloughs, layoffs, and outsourcing were among the most discussed items.

Township Administrator Frank Bastone described possible furloughs for the police department, which might result in the department being completely shut down for a whole day. Police salaries are the largest portion of the budget.

Mayor Jim Sandham prepared a list of days the committee should consider, most being Mondays or Fridays around a holiday; a four-day weekend might be better received by employees.
