'Whole world of garbage' opens up to recycling coordinator

Thanks to the efforts of Montville Township's recycling coordinator, Adam Brewer, the township Recycle improved its recycling rate by a third. The key was to improve local businesses compliance with submitting annual tonnage reports.

This is no doubt why Brewer is one of 19 people to be honored by the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority, MUA, at its annual recycling awards dinner on Nov. 6.

According to a press release, all the award recipients have made "significant contributions toward the success of waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and litter abatement"

As it turns out, Brewer said he has no idea for what specifically he is being honored. "I'm just doing the best I can," he said.

Brewer, formerly the youth services coordinator, has been recycling coordinator for two years and has worked for the township for eight years. Recycling is just one of his jobs as assistant administrator, and for which he had to learn more about garbage than he ever could have imagined.

Fitting for Lerners to make their mark in the field of learning

Harriet Lerner mused, "I like to tell people that there is always a Lerner at Little Learner," referring to Ribbon Cutting her day-care facilities which offer programs ranging from an infant center to a school-aged child care program. Truth is, it really is a family business with her husband and three grown children all contributing.

This year marks the 20th anniversary for Little Learner Academy and recently, Lerner opened a new facility on Changebridge Road in Montville Township. There are three other locations.

The schools are not Lerner’s first venture into early education. Previously she operated Community Nursery School out of her home in the White Meadow Lake section of Rockaway Township.

St. Pius X Church has reached an exciting milestone!

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Roman Catholic parish, in 1959, in an old Quilt1[1] apple barn in Towaco.  The current church building was completed in 1963, and several expansions have continued throughout the years.

Special events for the church and adjoining school will be ongoing throughout this “Jubilee Year,” as the St. Pius X community remembers God’s blessings, celebrates God’s presence, and reaffirms its belief in God’s providence for the future, in keeping with the jubilee theme:  “We Remember.  We Celebrate.  We Believe.”  To kick off the festivities, Masses held on the weekend of October 18th were begun with the blowing of the traditional “shofar,” or ram’s horn.  Dating back to ancient Hebrew times, the shofar heralds a “Year of Favor from the Lord.”

The students of St. Pius X School have also contributed to the celebration.  By creating a quilt in which each school family is represented with a creatively decorated square in the quilt, the students have expressed “What My Church Means to Me.”  Sister June Morrissey, Principal of St. Pius X School remarked, “The quilt is a beautiful representation of the light that shines in each of our students, and serves as a visible reminder of what is most important to focus on in the next 50 years.”
