TC Votes for New Animal Shelter

Updates from Committeeman Art Daughtry:

At the 1/27 meeting the TC voted 5 - 0 to purchase the prefab new animal shelter structure. The new structure will go on the 7 church lane site and the existing building will be demolished.

In the next two weeks the Board of Ed is expected to sign the lease with Montville Township to renovate or construct new Board offices at the 86 River Road site.

The old salt storage barn behind 86 River is scheduled for replacement however the new salt barn will be co located with the county facilities behind the new police station on rt 202. Then the old salt barn at 86 river will be demolished probably along with the old storage barn where the dpw was located.

The lights on rt 202 are finaly done if you haven't noticed.

Students rise to ‘The Challenge’

A television audience watched as several Montville High School students rose to “The Challenge” and succeeded. “The Challenge” in question is a Jeopardy-like game show on News 12 New Jersey in which teams from high schools across the tri-state area compete by answering questions designed to test their knowledge.

The Montville team’s victory, 310-240 against Irvington High School, means that the local students will now continue to the next round. The best teams from each region will face off against each other this spring. Regional champions will then compete for the ultimate title, “Tri-State Challenge Champion.” Besides bragging rights, the regional team champions receive $2,500 and the ultimate winners get $10,000. Each student participating in the championship match will receive $500.

The students that ably answered those tough questions for Montville were Andrew Baim (team captain), Thomas Hoffmann, Sora Kim, Calvin Leung (team alternate), and Christina Socci.

Montville Pyschiatrist Jack Dang Explores his Life, Two Societies, in Memoir “Ruminations”.

Nielson named to 2nd term as Montville mayor

The township committee unanimously returned Mayor Deborah Nielson and Deputy Mayor Jim Sandham to their posts for a second consecutive year at its reorganization meeting on Tuesday night.  Both Nielson and Sandham, who previously ran together in 2005, were administered the oath of office by Assemblyman Jay Webber, R-Morris Plains.

The two Republicans, who easily won re-election, ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility, accountability and the continued protection of Montville’s natural resources, thanked their colleagues. They also singled out their families, municipal employees and township residents for their continued support.

“Thank you to the citizens of Montville for renewing your faith in this old CPA,” said Sandham, a corporate Chief Financial Officer who lives in Towaco. “I look forward to another three years of continued progress for the town.”  Nielson, a NJ licensed Planner and landscape architect who is a Longview resident, said it was “an honor and a privilege” to be re-elected.

She highlighted the municipal accomplishments made in 2008, specifically the township’s achievement of the prestigious AAA bond rating, commitment to modify the Route 46 corridor and adoption of a master plan for Towaco. See Daily Record.

Move over AC - here’s MontvilleOpoly

In the board game Monopoly, which takes its locale names from Atlantic City, the high stakes involve obtaining the property of The Boardwalk. In a local version, MontvilleOpoly, the stakes are higher and very real: a better life for children in Kibera, Kenya.

MontvilleOpoly is the brainchild of Alexi Corham, a sophomore at Montville Township High School who was inspired to act after hearing about the poor circumstances endured by students living on the other side of the world.

As Corham explained it, “My aunt, Heidi Pidcoke, works at a school in Kibera and also serves on the Board of an organization called Watoto wa Lwanga, which provides assistance and education to children in Nairobi’s slums. Kibera is estimated to be the home of almost a million people, half of whom are under the age of 15 and where a third of adults has AIDS. My aunt told me that, if I could raise $11,000 for the school, she could repair the library and add girls to the vocational training programs.”
