Pet First Aid & Emergency Preparedness
Location: The Parsippany Public Library - 449 Halsey Road
Your pet depends on you for his or her well-being. In addition to providing daily care, love and affection, your best friend depends on you in an emergency. Whether your pet becomes ill or injured, or needs help in a disaster - you need to know what to do.
What would you do in the event your pet is injured? What are the signs of distress and what should you look for? Dr. Steven Hodes of the Hodes Veterinary Group, Route 46, Mine Hill will inform pet owners on what first aid can be done at home, when they should call/visit their vet, or when they should go to an emergency animal hospital for immediate medical care.
Many people are not aware of the danger signs from their pet, until it is too late to help. Now is the time to learn what signs to look for, and what action you should take.
Meredith Perssons will be on hand to announce the newly formed Morris County Animal Rescue Team. Who they are, what they do - and their plans to help animals (both companion and wild) needing their assistance.
Merynda Fuellhart from EvakPak will help you set up emergency guidelines for your pet's safety so that you can make plans BEFORE there is an emergency. Don't leave your pet behind. Make sure you have a plan.
It is always better to take your pets with you but for many reasons, some evacuation centers will not allow pets. Make sure you know what your options are and be ready to have what you need to care for your pet while away from home.
Could you grab your pet and everything you need to provide for it in 5 minutes or less? Would you be able to gather proof of current rabies and distemper vaccinations, medications and extra prescriptions, picture of you and your pet (for identification purposes) in the event you get separated, food & general care items, in a moments notice? If you are not at home, will someone else know about your pets, your plans and how to meet up with you at a safe location? Learn how to prepare for your pets as part of your household disaster planning.
