ARTICLE: WELLNESS IN OUR PERSONAL ENVIRONMENTS
Ask ten people what Wellness is and you get ten different answers. Wikipedia, the online dictionary, states that Wellness (in medicine) refers to a state of being healthy and since that is a ‘circular’ description to me, I like better the phrase that Halbert L. Dunn was credited with in the 1950’s, “Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind-body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being”
It’s wonderful to wish someone to ‘be well!’ and we certainly wish our loved ones to be well and live well just as we wish those ‘states of well-being’ for ourselves. So, we can say that Wellness is a state of well-being in all ages of life; a life span that is increasing every year (100 year olds are less and less unusual).
The goal should be to make those added years full of increased well-being. The idea of going to a doctor with an ache or pain and being told “What do you expect at your age?” is bogus!
While many are aware of the challenges, most feel helpless in preventing the aging and disease process. We are starting to look at stress related and chronic diseases as ‘normal’ Cancer, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and high blood pressure … NORMAL??
Our so-called “healthcare system” (in reality a “sick care system”) is under attack and rightfully so. “Sick-care” costs are doubling each year. In the form it exists, not only are we challenged and often made sicker (adverse reaction to Rx drugs in a hospital setting is now the third leading cause of death-7, 000 per year and rapidly increasing) but our beleaguered physicians are given little or no training on how to bring us back to wellness after an accident or disease strikes. Yet another reason why we must ‘take control’ of our health and use all methods available to aid us on that path back up the ladder to renewed “WELLNESS”
According to the AMA (American Medical Association), a dollar spent on prevention is worth over nine dollars in “sick care” The World Health Organization places the ration at 1 to 15. We need to keep informed about environmental and toxic substances around us and learn how to protect our immune system and prevent illness.
One essential environment that we can take true ownership of is our home and, by extension, our schools, offices etc. There are simple solutions; we need to learn about them. When essential needs are compromised, a flower will begin to wilt. To help the flower we supply basic needs in a greenhouse environment. We are no different. The answer is to create a greenhouse/Wellness Home for your family.
John Jackson, M.D. sums it up very well:
